Chess siren's jazzy move
| CHESS starlet Arianne Caoili's glamour-girl status could squash her budding romance with a hunky grandmaster caught in a jealous clash for her attention. But, never one to miss a strategic opportunity, the would-be jazz singer hopes to score a record deal out of the publicity generated by the night-club stoush. The 19-year-old, dubbed the Anna Kournikova of chess, said her high profile, combined with that of long-time friend and world No.3 Levon Aronian, had put "stupid" pressure and attention on the pair. The two made headlines around the world yesterday after their salsa dancing at a post-tournament party ignited a clash between Armenian Aronian and British champion Danny Gormally. Caoili said she wanted to keep private the exact nature of her relationship with Aronian, considered the David Beckham of his home country. "Aronian is going to be world champion, everybody loves him. I am some sort of beauty, OK, whatever ... so people are interested,'' she said from Italy yesterday. "He and I are very good friends, very." Asked if they were definitely an item, she said: "That's not the press's business." Caoili said she would see Aronian at a tournament in Germany next week and didn't plan to speak to him before then. "I saw him two days ago,'' she said. "I just want to do my thing." The multi-talented beauty said she was working on some original songs and had received dozens of supportive emails from fans who, in the wake of the incident, had listened to demos on her website. Hundreds of people had heard the tunes, she said, and it was possible a record company might be interested. The Queenslander managed a draw in her chess match at the Italian competition on Wednesday, despite the distraction of a whirl of media interest. She was scheduled to play two more games last night and was relishing the thought of a fight on the chessboard, not the dancefloor. "All I want to do is play some tournaments," she said. She maintained she had done nothing to fuel the high-profile clash between Gormally and Aronian. "I didn't do anything to provoke it. He (Gormally) was on medication and alcohol. He has apologised to me,"Caoili said. Source: http://www.dailytelegraph.news.com.au |
